Vaughan Williams Overture 'The Wasps'
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor
Michael Murray Visions of the A-Frame
Sir James MacMillan Concerto for Orchestra ‘Ghosts’
Ava Bahari, violin
Sir James MacMillan, conductor
A highly accomplished Swedish violinist, Bahari is currently Artist-in-Residence with Gothenburg Symphony, with 24/25 season highlights including performances with Philharmonia, Helsinki Philharmonic and Tokyo Symphony orchestras. Tonight, she’ll perform Mendelssohn’s uplifting Violin Concerto (a tried-and-tested audience favourite!).
Sir James MacMillan conducts his new Concerto for Orchestra Ghosts, and judging by that title (and knowing MacMillan’s passionate belief in the communicative power of music), there’s every reason to expect a lot more than just a colourful workout for a full symphony orchestra. MacMillan has also helped a generation of composers find their own individual voice at his Cumnock Tryst festival, and tonight we explore the sound world of Ayrshire composer Michael Murray.
Please note: Ava Bahari replaces Jennifer Pike, who is recovering from a micro-fracture on one of her wrists. We wish Jennifer a swift recovery and are very grateful to Ava Bahari for stepping in to perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.
