'I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.'
This production is a fascinating insight into one of the most iconic films in cinematic history, and the real-life drama surrounding the award-winning actors who brought it to the screen.
The original film told the story of Norma Desmond - an egotistical faded star desperate to return to the millions of fans she had deserted - and the young, down-on-his-luck writer who sees an opportunity to exploit her. A story of ambition, delusion and Hollywood's brutal star system, it captivated audiences and earned its place in cinematic legend.
But backstage, the drama was no less fraught - filled with unexpected twists:
Why did Mae West turn down the leading role?
How did Hollywood react to such a savage indictment of the star system, and the monsters it creates?
This refreshed and re-explored adaptation by Morag Fullarton (
Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut) answers all these questions and more. A truly captivating theatrical treat starring
Juliet Cadzow, best known for her role in
Balamory and co-starring
John Kielty (
Outlander,
Taggart),
Frances Thorburn (
River City, Taggart and
Waterloo Road) and
Mark McDonnell (
Good Omens, Velvet Soup).
